On Monday, Byrd Stadium’s gates will be opened from 1 to 4pm, and students will have the opportunity to lounge and relax in the stands, while soaking up the sun and hanging out with friends. It’s sure to be a great time to enjoy spring before the stress of finals begins.
While Byrd Beach has been resurrected in recent years, the tradition is one that dates back to the 1950s. The Byrd Stadium bleachers were a hot spot for students looking to take a break between classes and catch some rays. Byrd Beach was all the rave, and hundreds of students packed the bleachers each week, even if it meant skipping classes to do so. This 1979 article from the Baltimore Sun gives us a clearer picture of what Byrd Beach life was all about.
Trips to Byrd Beach eventually fizzled out in the late 1980s, but now students have one day out of the year to relive the excitement of the storied Maryland tradition. So go out Monday and pack Byrd like it’s 1979!
