90 Years Ago in The Diamondback: Prize-Winning Fruit Growers & Corny Jokes

90 years ago, with the football season wrapped for the year, The Diamondback reported on the competitive success of another Maryland team: the three young men who took second place at the annual Inter-collegiate Fruit Growing Contest, held on December 9th at Penn State.

Coached by Professor W.E. Whitehouse of the Horticulture Department, J.L. McCartney, C.L. Huffard, and C.P. Harley beat out teams from Penn State, Massachusetts Agricultural College, Rutgers, and Ohio State. Only West Virginia University scored higher. What’s more, Mr. Harley won second place in the individual competition. We can only hope that some of that award-winning fruit was then baked into delicious pies for the holidays.
