First touchdown in Byrd Stadium, 1950
Did you watch the first UMD football game this past Saturday? The Terps pulled out a win – the first of many, we hope! In honor of the new season, check out this photograph of star Terps quarterback Jack Scarbath scoring the first touchdown in the newly-built Byrd Stadium. The Terps played the United States Naval Academy. The final score of this September 30, 1950 game was Maryland, 35; Navy, 21. Go Terps!

You can watch this game here – it’s part of our football film digitization project. The video includes two games: Maryland vs. Navy on November 10, 1951 and Maryland vs. Navy on September 30, 1950.
